Life onboard a lightship could be boring and mundane, but because a lightship was never allowed to leave its location, regardless of the weather conditions, it could also be very dangerous.
We are sharing a few, now historic, photos taken on board the Lightship Nantucket LV 112 by Edward R. Irwin in the early 1950s to help us all to remember and honor the young men who served on the historic vessel as well as other lightships. They all made sacrifices for the service and the benefit of others that we should never forget.
The Lightship Nantucket LV- 112 WLV-534 is now owned by the U.S. Lightship Museum and is being lovingly restored under the leadership of Robert Mannino Jr. The lightship is now at the Boston Harbor Shipyard in East Boston, Massachusetts. The lightship is also sometimes called the Nantucket Lightship or the Nantucket Shoals Lightship.
