In this day and age, lighthouse groups large and small need to come with more and more creative ways to raise money for their lighthouse, especially groups that are in the early stages of fund raising. Such was the case last October when the Cameron Preservation Alliance held a Beach Race/Walk to raise money for the endangered Sabine Pass Lighthouse in Cameron Parish, Louisiana.
Nearly 200 registered runners were challenged by the loose sand and higher than normal tide conditions, an experience that they will not soon forget or experience at other similar races. Among the awards given to winners in different categories was a framed print of a sunrise at the Sabine Pass Lighthouse. After the race all participants and volunteers were treated to a Botsky’s Premium Hot Dog, which are made in southwest Louisiana.
After expenses they raised a whopping $30,126 toward their first $463,000 phase of the restoration of the tower, which will be toward the stabilization of the masonry of 160-year old tower. They also hope to use a small portion of the money to create Sabin Pass Lighthouse license plate, which would produce long term income for the lighthouse.
