The Friends of Wind Point Lighthouse, who, for years until recently, contributed countless hours to the preservation and interpretation of the Wind Point Lighthouse in Wind Point, Wisconsin, have changed their name to the Racine Lighthouse and Maritime Preservation Society (RLAMPS).
A little over a year ago, in a dispute between the Village of Wind Point and the Friends of Wind Point Lighthouse, the village severed its ties with the Friends of Wind Point Lighthouse who had been giving tours of the lighthouse for the previous sixteen years and operated a museum in the former foghorn building. Since then, the Friends group have removed their artifacts and exhibits from the foghorn building and they are now in storage.
The new Racine Lighthouse and Maritime Preservation Society have stated that its mission of “preservation through education” will not only include the Wind Point Lighthouse, but all the lighthouses of the Racine area, as well as the rich maritime history of Racine, Wisconsin.
Racine had a number of lighthouses that no longer stand, including two of the most unusual architectural styles of lighthouses to ever be built on the Great Lakes. To help promote their efforts, the new group has created a web site at www.rlamps.org.
