Throughout out its active history, Florida’s St. Marks Lighthouse had to depend on rain water gathered in cisterns. Historical records indicate that one of the cisterns was underneath the keeper’s house. During removal of vinyl floor tile for asbestos mitigation, the cistern was exposed. The void measured seven feet by ten feet and ten feet deep, and was completely intact.
