The oldest standing operational lighthouse in the United States closed this past September and will be closed for seven months while it undergoes restoration. Work began on September 25th at the 1764 Sandy Hook Lighthouse located within the boundaries of New Jersey’s Gateway National Recreation Area.
We don’t know if the 3rd order Fresnel lens in the lantern will be removed or allowed to remain in place as part of this restoration.
