The ownership of Moose Peak Lighthouse on Mistake Island in Jonesport, Maine has been transferred from Donald J. Vaccaro to the Arnold Memorial Medical Building Society (AMMBS) of Jonesport, Maine.

Mr. Vaccaro, who purchased the lighthouse at a government auction in 2012 for $93,500, donated the lighthouse to AMMBS of Jonesport, Maine. It seems Mr. Vaccaro was anxious to get a tax deduction before the year ended.

Unfortunately, Mr. Vaccaro has never made any effort to restore the lighthouse since he purchased it. That expense will now fall to AMMBS.

Interestingly, Billy Milliken, the president of AMMBS, is an ancestral nephew of Alexander Milliken who, from 1827 to 1849, was the first keeper of the Moose Peak Lighthouse. The current tower was built in 1851 to replace an earlier tower. The name of the lighthouse is sometimes spelled Moosepeak, and it also sometimes referred to as the Mistake Island Lighthouse.

Sadly, the beautiful keeper’s house that once stood there no longer stands; it was blown up in a demolition exercise in 1982.
