Dear Tim:
I saw your Facebook article about the late Ken Black, founder of the Maine Lighthouse Museum. He was in charge of the Coast Guard base in Rockland, Maine, when my ex-husband was based there in 1971. On the day my son Lenny was born, he wrote out a check and handed it to me. It was for $25 which covered the co-pay of our Coast Guard insurance! Bless him! Twenty-five dollars was a lot of money back then, especially for military people.
Another short story that I would like to share:
The first Thanksgiving at that I spent at the Coast Guard base in Rockland, I helped the cook (a guy named Chuck) cook the dinner — I never made so many cookies in my life! There was some batter left over in the huge bowl that I used to mix batter in and I came up with a great idea on what to do with it. I then made the largest chocolate chip cookie I had ever seen! I then wrote a note that said, “To Mr. Black, the biggest cookie in the bunch.” I then placed the cookie on his desk . . . ? – He loved it. What a great man he was!
