The 1st order Fresnel lens that once topped the Gay Head Lighthouse on Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts is now in its new home at the former Marine Hospital, now renovated as the new Martha’s Vineyard Museum in Vineyard Haven.
When the 1854 lens was removed from the Gay Head Lighthouse in 1952, it was housed in a short brick tower and lantern that had been built on the grounds of the Martha’s Vineyard Historical Society Museum in Edgartown, Massachusetts.
Jim Woodward of The Lighthouse Consultant, LLC, who was in charge of dissembling, moving, restoring, and reassembling of the lens, said, “Being able to save this lens and finally have it properly displayed in its own museum wing is one of the great moments of my 53-year career.”
