Town May Acquire Light Keepers’ House

The City of St. Joseph Michigan is considering purchasing the house that was once a duplex where the lighthouse keepers who tended the St. Joseph North Pierhead Inner and Outer Lighthouses once resided.

In 1995, the St. Joseph North Pierhead ...

The former keepers’ house is now owned by the U.S. Coast Guard, which wants to dispose of the property under the Coast Guard Housing Authority Act, which allows the house to be sold at fair market value, with the proceeds going toward new military housing.

The house has direct pedestrian access to Tiscornia Park and the base of the North Pier via a walking path. The City of St. Joseph now owns both of the lighthouses and has partnered with the Heritage Museum to provide tours of the lighthouses and the pier.

The former keepers’ duplex would be ideal for a museum, interpretive center, gift shop, and visitor’s center for the lighthouses. We hope that the City of St. Joseph is able to complete a purchase of the property.
