This past December 15th the ownership of California’s Point Fermin Lighthouse was ceremonially transferred to the City of Los Angeles in a “Keys to the Deed” ceremony held at the lighthouse.
Under the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act several organizations had vied for ownership of the lighthouse. But in 2015 the federal government awarded ownership of the lighthouse to the City of Los Angeles. However, it took until October of 2018 for the deed to be officially given to the city.
The December 15 date was chosen for the ceremony at the lighthouse because it was on that date in 1874 when the lighthouse was officially lighted for the first time.
On November 1, 2003, after the Point Fermin Lighthouse underwent an expensive restoration, it was opened to the public with tours provided by the Point Fermin Lighthouse Society. The group will continue to provide care to the grounds and provide tours.
