West Quoddy Lighthouse in Lubec, Maine will be the first lighthouse of the Continental United States to see the dawn of the new millennium.

A celebration is planned, which will be big by Lubec's 1800 population standards. The Governor of Maine, independent, Angus King will be in attendance along with the usual flock of dignitaries. The Governor will be escorted to the site by a Coast Guard cutter out of Eastport, Maine. A time capsule will be placed on the grounds of the lighthouse and the flags of the United States, Maine, and Canada will be unfurled.
