The tower of New York’s 1858 Fire Island Lighthouse was temporarily closed this past June so that experts could perform tests on the integrity of the structure, which they hope will provide answers as to why there is an on-going problem with moisture in the tower.
They also want to determine the cause of the deterioration of the outer face of the brick and the shotcrete coating. This will be accomplished through the installation of monitoring equipment that will remain in place for a full year to measure widths and movement of interior and exterior cracks, how the lighthouse moves, temperature, humidity, and moisture conditions.
