Although there are photos around of the interiors of lighthouses keepers’ homes in the late 1800s and early 1900s, for the most part, especially at remote lighthouses, they are rare.
This image, from a glass plate negative in the collection of the Great Harbor Maritime Museum in Northeast Harbor, Maine, was taken at Maine’s Mt. Desert Rock Lighthouse and is labeled “Lucy Dodge Room.”
Lucy Dodge was the wife of William H.C. Dodge who was the 2nd assistant keeper there from 1902 to 1909. The photo gives a rare glimpse into the life of a light keeper’s wife at a lighthouse that sits on a rock in the Atlantic Ocean, 20 miles from the nearest land. It also shows that even at a remote lighthouse there could still be some semblance of elegance and style of the time.
