With the safe removal of the lantern of the Lone Star State’s Bolivar Point Lighthouse, the first phase of the long-planned restoration of the 1872 tower has begun.
Amy Maxwell Chase, the executive director of the Bolivar Point Lighthouse Foundation (BPLF), said that seven years of planning and fundraising efforts preceded this past May 15th’s removal of the lantern from the 117-foot-tall lighthouse. The lift-off was well planned out ahead of time by McMillan Building Movers, led by George and Jordan McMillan, who spent weeks working on constructing custom-made braces and supports for the removal of the lantern.
It is estimated that total restoration of the historic tower will cost in the millions. When that will all take place is unclear. As well as fabricating a new lantern, the lighthouse walls and iron structures need to be restored or replaced; and, the tower will need to be painted with its original black-and-white bands.
