The $2 million restoration project of the Scituate Lighthouse in Massachusetts encountered unexpected challenges during the demolition and rebuilding process. The intricacies of the internal masonry conditions and the construction of the 2005 brick veneer posed unforeseen obstacles, prompting a reevaluation of the project’s scope.

In response to the discoveries, the project took a turn as the contractor, guided by Pomroy Associates’ Project Status Report, made the decision to remove the top 4’6” of the masonry tower entirely. This extensive action was taken to assess the internal/corte masonry thoroughly, hoping for an improvement in its condition. The careful evaluation aimed at ensuring the long-term stability and structural integrity of the lighthouse.

Despite these challenges, there has been significant progress. The lantern room’s structural frame fabrication has been successfully completed. After more than a year of meticulous work, the lantern has been returned to its rightful place atop the historic lighthouse tower. This milestone marks a crucial step in restoring the Scituate Lighthouse to its former glory.

The restoration journey included the removal of the lantern room in October 2022, with a dedicated year spent on its meticulous repair at a cost exceeding $2 million. Looking ahead, winter will witness crews installing new windows; and come spring, the lighthouse will receive a fresh coat of paint, bringing the current restoration project to a fulfilling conclusion. The Scituate Lighthouse stands as a testament to perseverance and commitment, ensuring its legacy endures for generations to come.
