The endangered lighthouse at Fort Taber in New Bedford, Massachusetts will be restored thanks in part to a donation by the electric company NSTAR.

City officials recently accepted the check which will enable them to have the historic lighthouse restored by June of 2001 with a relighting ceremony scheduled for June 15, the 132nd anniversary of the light station.

The light will be restored to its 1869 appearance. The lighthouse was restored in the late 1970’s, however, vandalism took its toll to the point that the light gives the appearance that it will collapse any day. However, this time the City will institute new security measures to protect the light.
