New Brunswick, Canada’s Shampers Bluff Lighthouse ...

The old Shampers Bluff Lighthouse, named as one of Canada’s most endangered lighthouses, is no more.

The light was located just off the Shampers Bluff Road on the Kingston Peninsula along the Saint John River, about 20 miles north of Saint John in New Brunswick, Canada.

Just recently the landowner decided to torch the old dilapidated lighthouse, which he had every right to do as it was a decommissioned tower sold to a private party with no protection whatsoever.

The reason for the burning of the light is not known at this time, however, it was more than likely done because it was considered an eyesore. This lighthouse, along with the Fish Fluke Light on Grand Manan Island, were the only two New Brunswick Lights listed on the “Doomsday List” put out by the Nova Scotia Lighthouse Preservation Society in April of this year. Interestingly, both came under private ownership.

Hopefully, in the future, this will not happen again. However, there are lots of lighthouses left in New Brunswick that remain in private ownership that are vulnerable to destruction at the whim of the owner.
