Sharps Island Lighthouse, built in 1882 is the third structure to occupy the site. A wooden tower built in 1838, which was replaced by a screwpile style structure in 1866. The screwpile lighthouse was destroyed by ice and replaced by the cast iron tower that stands there today. Since the 1970s ice floes have pushed against the tower causing it to tilt. In the mid 1900s the Coast Guard announced plans to destroy the structure, however public opposition convinced them to change their minds. Whoever gets this lighthouse will have an immense challenge on their hands.
