In 1894 a lighthouse keeper's cat apparently killed the last remaining Stephens Island wren or "Lyall's" wren. The bird, unheard of before the cat caught one, is now extinct. The specimens killed by the cat are now in the British Museum. Tower Height: 49 Height of Focal Plane: 600 Characteristic and Range: Two white flashes every 20 seconds, visible for 27 nautical miles. Description of Tower: White, conical, cast iron tower.
