This tower was erected in 1759 as the fourth tower at the Eddystone Rocks. It was the first successful waveswept tower in the world. After the tower was replaced by a new one, it was rebuilt at Plymouth Hoe as a monument to its builder, John Smeaton. The bottom part of the tower can still be seen near the present Eddystone Light.
