This 1930s photo shows the lighthouse was beginning to suffer structural damage. A careful examination of the 4th floor landing shows 2 steel compression belts were in place, an attempt to hold it all together. An earthquake late in 1948 led to the removal of the upper portion in 1949. Back to the edition of: July 2009
