Mt. Desert Rock Lighthouse keepers George and Helen York with children Bill and Shirley at family reading time in the keeper’s house around 1931. To the right of them is the old enamel coal stove used for heating. To their left is the family entertainment center which Shirley recalls might have been an Atwater-Kent Radio. Even though they were on a remote island, with the wind howling around them and waves crashing on the rocks, the keeper’s home was warm and comfortable.
