Assistant Passage Island Lighthouse keeper Vern Bowen with his daughter Ann, known as Annie, at Passage Island Lighthouse around 1935. Vern Bowen, a veteran United States Lighthouse Service keeper, joined the Coast Guard in 1939 when the Lighthouse Service was dissolved. Forty two years after she left Passage Island Lighthouse, Annie (Bowen) Hoge returned to the island and located a Treasure Chest of Memories she had buried there as a child. She found her necklace given to her by her mother and father in 1941 and a doll she had loved so much. She looked at them recalling the memories and then reburied them to remain part of the history of the island. Several years later she returned with her children and grandchildren who also buried a treasure box near where Annie’s is buried. (Lighthouse Digest archives.)
