In 1961 the United States Coast Guard made the decision and issued the directive to demolish the historic and one of the most architecturally significant lighthouses ever built in the United States. No other lighthouse has ever been built like it. In this image, the lantern room of the lighthouse rests disgracefully upside down in the water. If you look very closely, you will see two of the wrecker's crew standing on top of the lighthouse where the lantern room once stood.
