Photo Caption:

The Nantucket Lightship LV-112 when it was a steam powered vessel. Among its many United States distinctions; it is the largest lightship ever built; it is the heaviest lightship ever built, it served on the last lightship station to be discontinued (1983); at 100 miles from the mainland, it was the farthest offshore lightship; it was built to the specifications of a battleship; and it is the only United States lightship to serve in international waters. In 1960 major modifications were made to the vessel. At that time it was changed to a diesel powered vessel and its smokestack was removed.
