This month's beautiful cover photo is of Virginia's Old Cape Henry Lighthouse taken by Bill Mertz of Eastpoint, Michigan. The lighthouse was built in 1791-92. In 1862, during the War Between the States, Confederate troops took the lens and destroyed the lantern room. At the end of the war the tower was restored and relighted. The lighthouse was eventually deemed unsafe and a new lighthouse built nearby. However the old tower still stands having been restored in the 1970's. It is located on the grounds of Fort Story in Virginia Beach, Virginia and is open to the public from mid-March to October.
