Lighthouse keeper Leo L. Whaley II and his wife Shirley in front of the Anacapa Island Lighthouse in 1959. This was the first lighthouse station to which they were assigned. It was here at Anacapa that their son gained the nickname of Skip. As a small child, he often sat on his father’s lap and helped pilot the station’s boat to the mainland for supplies and mail. After being stationed at Anacapa, the family was transferred to New Point Loma Lighthouse, also in California. After that, Whaley was sent to Mary Island Lighthouse in Alaska, where the family was not allowed to live with him. After a year at Mary Island Lighthouse Whaley was transferred to Point Conception Lighthouse where Skip attended a one room school with five other students. Point Conception was the end of Whaley’s lighthouse keeping duties. He later served at the Alameda Coast Guard Station, then duty on the Coast Guard Cutter Citrus out of Kodiak, Alaska, and finally he served as the commander of the USCG Sumac on the Mississippi River.
