The Cedar Island Lighthouse, once owned by lawyer Phelan Beale, is now on the Lighthouse Digest list of endangered lighthouses. In 1967 the lighthouse was acquired by Suffolk County. In 1974 it was badly damaged by a fire. Although minor repairs have taken place over the years, the lighthouse continues to deteriorate from neglect and vandalism. In 2002 a local lighthouse group announced plans to restore and save the lighthouse. At that time, they did save the oil house; however, funding for the restoration of the actual lighthouse station is slow, especially in these economic times. Additionally, the planned restoration has also been tied up in bureaucratic red tape.
