Photo Caption:

The first tower at Race Point Lighthouse was built in 1816 and lighted for the first time in November of that year. It is believed that this photo was taken in 1860. Notice the horse drawn cart with its oversized wheels used by the lighthouse keepers to get supplies to the lighthouse over the sand dunes. In later years the lantern shown here was replaced by another lantern. This tower was torn down in 1876 and replaced by the current tower that stands today at Race Point Lighthouse.
