Photo Caption:

The 1883 Sandy Point Shoal Lighthouse in the Upper Chesapeake Bay near Skidmore, Maryland where Wilson Rawls was stationed in the 1940s. The lighthouse was automated in 1963. In late 1979 some moronic idiots broke into the lighthouse and smashed the 4th order Fresnel lens to smithereens. They were never caught. In 2006, under the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act, the lighthouse was auctioned off to a private owner for $250,000. (Lighthouse Digest archives.)
