Photo Caption:
Deer Island Thorofare Lighthouse, where Joseph Muise served as the lighthouse keeper from 1935 to 1936, was a very tranquil setting. On September 10, 1958 a battery explosion in the basement caused a fire that destroyed the keeper’s house. Rather than rebuild a new house, the Coast Guard then decided to automate the lighthouse.
