The fog signal cannon was first used at Boston Lighthouse in 1719. In the 1960s it was removed from the island for display at the Coast Academy in New London, Connecticut. In 1993 the restored cannon and its new carriage were helicoptered back to Boston Lighthouse where it is now on display inside the base of the tower. (Lighthouse Digest archives.)
