This historic image of Mt. Desert Rock Lighthouse where James A. Morris and his wife lived in the late 1800s shows the old wooden bell tower. This bell tower offered the keepers no protection from the elements. The Morrises recalled that it was not uncommon for the keepers to often ring the bell by hand for hours at a time on foggy nights, or when the blowing wet snow would obscure the light from the lantern.
