James S. Hughes, circa 1890s, served for 37 total years at Cape Blanco, 30 of those years as an assistant to James Langlois and the last seven years as head keeper upon Langlois’ retirement. James Hughes’ family was well established in the area and also ran a dairy with over 100 milk cows on more than 1000 acres. Their beautiful Queen Anne style family home, built in 1898, was considered the showplace of the area. It still stands today and is run as a historic house museum for touring visitors by the Cape Blanco Heritage Society. (Courtesy Cape Blanco Heritage Society.)
