At the end of January, 1930 there was an unprecedented freeze that caused an estimated 12 to 20-foot ice pack to form in the Columbia River. Many vessels were frozen in place and commerce stopped. The lighthouse tenders Manzanita and Rose were sent out to break ice and free trapped ships. (Courtesy of Columbia River Maritime Museum)
