Although Elizabeth Hill lived with her husband at a number of different lighthouse stations, her fondest memories of lighthouse life were in this keeper’s house at the Ipswich Lighthouse. After the tower was moved to Martha’s Vineyard, the house was left empty by the government. According to Susan Boice in Historic Ipswich, Volume 2, “For many years it was referred to as the scout house, for a weekend or just by the night, for fun and parties. The old house burned around 1970, which was another great loss to the residents of Ipswich.” The cause of the fire was not given. Elizabeth Hill recalled that in later years her daughters used to take her back to the Ipswich Lighthouse property frequently. “We’d walk around the beach, and enjoy it. But the last time we were there, I felt that things had changed so much. The dunes are all moved around, and different, or gone altogether so much so that I don’t like to go down there so much. Just the same, we spent our happiest days there once upon a time.” (Courtesy Maurie Hill.)
