Orlo Hayward was just shy of 18 years old when he was on the Rock as 4th assistant under Robert Gerlof. After his service on Tilly, Orlo kept in touch with the Old Man. Gerlof sent Orlo a $20 gold coin on the occasion of Orlo’s oldest son’s birth. It was true that Gerlof was generous to those few whom he called his friends.
