When Harold McLean (l) and Stewart Edward (r) retired in 1973 they were reportedly the last civilian employees left in the Coast Guard on the Great Lakes from the days of the U.S. Lighthouse Service. On the day of their retirement, Capt. Robert J. Bloxsom, commander of Michigan’s Sault Ste. Marie Coast Guard Station, ordered the flag to be flown for that day at the base. At the time, the Coast Guard said that this was the last U.S. Lighthouse Service flag to have been previously flown at a Great Lakes lighthouse. (Lighthouse Digest archives.)
