Andrew John Nowland (Quartermaster USLHS), the author’s grandfather, was a member of the crew of the U.S. Lighthouse Service Lighthouse Tender Hyacinth. On October 24, 1922 while attempting to make a delivery to South Fox Island Lighthouse, the ship’s First Officer George K. Brown and two other crewmen were tossed into the rough water while attempting a delivery. Andrew John Nowland and others from the Hyacinth immediately launched into rescue mode. Although First Officer Brown drowned, they did manage to rescue Engineer Ralph McCauley and Seaman Konkel. Andrew John Nowland received a letter of commendation for his part in the rescue.
