The 120-foot-tall Carysfort Reef Lighthouse is another one of the spindly-legged lighthouses built by George Meade. It was completed in 1852 to replace a lightship that had been stationed at the site. On September 8, 1919, lighthouse keeper William H. Curry lost his life in a hurricane while attempting to return to the lighthouse. The last keepers were removed from the lighthouse in 1962. In 2014, the lighthouse, which is on the Lighthouse Digest Doomsday List of Endangered Lighthouses, was declared unstable and unsafe by the United States Coast Guard.
