This depicted first Bayou St. John Lighthouse, marking the approach to New Orleans, was built in 1811. It was the first lighthouse to be built in the United States outside of the 13 founding colonies. Its 28-foot octagonal wood tower displayed a sperm-oil lamp rather than the candles used in other lighthouses of the same era until the Argand lamp was developed the following year. The lighthouse tower was rebuilt in 1837 after being destroyed by a storm. Back to the edition of: May/Jun 2019
