Sands Point Lighthouse as it appeared from the water in 1919 when Thomas J. Murray was the lighthouse keeper. The March 11, 1920 edition of the Brooklyn Daily Eagle reported that two exhausted dogs showed up one day at the lighthouse. Keeper Thomas Murray made friends with them and fed the hungry creatures. From their dog license numbers, he found out that the two dogs belonged to an owner in New Rochelle, clear across the sound. The newspaper speculated by writing, “It is five miles across the Sound from Manhasset Neck to New Rochelle. The channel is kept open for the Sound steamers and the dogs must have crossed it swimming after a long journey on the ice.” The dogs’ owner eventually showed up to claim the pets.
