The unfinished doll cradle that Samuel was making for his daughter Ethel’s fourth birthday is a poignant reminder of the hazards of lighthouse duty on an off-shore station. Samuel constructed the cradle from a lighthouse kerosene crate as is shown by the Texaco star emblem and the partial words “Lighthouse Service” on one end. The other cradle end and the rockers were also made out of the same stamped boards. (Courtesy of Heather Godfrey Willis)
