This 1981 photo shows the beauty of the symmetrical arrangement of the prisms of the bi-valve lens in the tower. Only six years later, the lens would be removed during automation and replaced with a DCB-224 revolving double-drummed aero-beacon. Happily, the Fresnel lens is preserved on-site in the keeper’s house as part of the displays maintained by the Montauk Historical Society. Back to the edition of: Nov/Dec 2019
