Nils is piloting his light tender boat, the Hilma, with Miss Fannie on the bow, his wife Hilma holding baby Chester, and their Swedish friends, the Stones, toward the back. Nils used the boat to do his work at Coos Bay tending the range lights. He also set nets and he and Hilma fished for salmon to sell at the local canneries or fish markets.
