As can be seen from this photo taken last year, Virginia’s Cape Charles Lighthouse is now rusting away. As well as being the tallest lighthouse of its type in the United States, it is the second tallest lighthouse in the nation. When the lighthouse was automated in 1963, its first order Fresnel lens was removed from the tower and was replaced by a DCB-224 aero-beacon, which was later replaced by a 190mm solar powered optic. The first order Fresnel lens is now on display at the Newport News Mariners Museum in Newport News, Virginia.
