Kathy Mack, daughter of Watch Hill Lighthouse keeper Bill Mack, is sitting on the remains of the stone foundation that held the fog horns that were severely damaged by Hurricane Carol on August 31, 1954. The Mack family rode out the hurricane in the keeper’s house. The storm caused $125,000 in damage to the light station. Hurricane Carol was so ferocious that the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration retired the name for a decade. (Lighthouse Digest archives) Back to the edition of: Nov/Dec 2020
