Boatswain’s Mate 1st Class Charles “Rusty” Merritt (USCG), a native of North Carolina, who was the 33-year-old keeper at Watch Hill Light from 1984 to 1986, takes a moment to reflect on the fact that he would be the last lighthouse keeper to serve at this picturesque location. At the time, he told a local reporter, “You get attached to the place.” He lived here with his wife Linda and their two children. For a brief time during his stint at Watch Hill Lighthouse, a 1986 security crisis forced its closure to the public after Libyan forces had attacked a Coast Guard Station in the Caribbean.
