Although the Manitowoc Breakwater Lighthouse still stands, it looks much different today than it appears in this image. Today it is painted white. In the early days, two men alternated twelve-hour watches here from noon to midnight and midnight to noon. In the 1920s, this would be changed to three men, each doing an eight-hour shift. The large lighthouse looks safe enough, but danger in getting to the lighthouse was always present. (Lighthouse Digest archives.) Back to the edition of: Jan/Feb 2011
