Photo Caption:

This rare image shows U.S. Lighthouse Service Inspector Stanley W. Worthington with lighthouse keeper George W. Codding in 1931 in the lantern room of the 1884 Rochester Harbor North Pier Lighthouse. At the time, the construction had started on the land-based Control Station that would run the lighthouse and fog signal from the mainland. Several years later the tower was gone. This photograph shows the U.S. Lighthouse Service Efficiency Star on the lapel of Codding’s vest. The Star, rarely given out, was only awarded to keepers who gave exceptionable service over a period of time.
